Blaze Victorious in Their 2014 Home Opener!

On the chilly evening of May 3rd the Madison Blaze were welcomed to the field at Breitenbach Stadium on the campus of Middleton High School by a boisterous crowd of over 240 fans who came to cheer them on as they took on the Minnesota Vixen. The game featured a pair of undefeated teams battling for an early season IWFL Mid-West Division lead.

Chelsea Alt got the Blaze off to a good start by booting the opening kick-off into the end zone for a touchback. Five plays later, facing a 3rd and 18 on their own 25 yard line, Minnesota elected to go to the air. Reading the play perfectly, Tiffany Lein reached the ball at the same time as the Vixen receiver, won a wrestling match for the ball and ran 22 yards to the end zone to give the Blaze an early lead. Alt added a PAT to put the Madison Blaze on top 7-0.

After another booming kick-off by Alt, the Vixen started their next drive from their own 17 yard line. Once again the Blaze put together a tough defensive stand which included a quarter back sack and 3 tackles for losses and the Vixen were forced to punt from their own 26 yard line.

The Vixen defense also came to play and the Blaze’s offense got off to a bit of a slow start but their defense continued to play strong and the 1st Quarter ended with a 7-0 Blaze lead.

As the second quarter started, the defenses for both teams continued to dominate the game. On their second possession of the 2nd Quarter, facing a 4th and 12 on the Vixen 30 yd line, the Blaze coaches realized that the team had to do something to break their offense struggles so they dialed up a fake punt. Blaze punter, Brenda Seggerman took the snap and tossed a 20 yard pass into the hands of Tiffany Loomis for a first down on the Vixen 10 yard line. Three plays later, Kara Haines capped off the drive with an 8 yd romp into the end zone. After another successful PAT by Alt, the Blaze led 14-0.
In the second half, sparked by Haines 23 yd sprint on the team’s first offensive play, the Blaze’s offense began to move the ball down the field. The Blaze picked up 6 of their 8 total first downs and 114 of their 181 total offensive yards in the second half.

The Blaze’s defense also continued to dominate, shutting down two nice 4th Quarter Vixen drives and dashing their hopes of a score. The first of these plays came on a 1st and 10 from the Blaze’s 23yd line. The Vixen ball carrier ran the ball 7 yards before being met by the Blaze’s Pam Close and Jenn Grulke. Close knocked the ball loose and Sara Gibson recovered the fumble to thwart the Vixen scoring threat. The second play came on a 3rd and 10 from the Blaze 28 with a little over 2 minutes left on the game clock. The Vixen Quarterback threw the ball down the middle of the field where it was picked off by the Blaze’s Sara Gibson at the 12 yd line.

After the Blaze picked up a first down on a 19 yard scamper by Quarterback, Sheena Hirschfield they were able to run the clock out to secure a 14-0 victory, go to 2-0 on the season and take an early season lead in the IWFL Mid-West Division.
Off the field, due to the fantastic supporters who came out for the game the Madison Blaze were able to donate $260 in gate receipts to their Charity Partner for the game, The Dane County Humane Society.
